National Mosque
This beautiful mosque sits on a 5.2 hectare plot close to the
Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. Green lawns, water fountains,
pools and a modern design embody a contemporary expression of
traditional Islamic art, calligraphy and ornamentation. Its most
striking feature is the multi-fold umbrella-like roof and a
245-foot minaret.
Islamic Art Museum
The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia located at Jalan Lembah Perdana
houses various themed galleries. Among the galleries found here
is the Islamic Architecture Gallery which showcases miniature
replicas of renowned buildings such as the Taj Mahal, Imam
Ismail Albukhary Mosque and Museum and the Amir Timur Mausoleum.
Apart from this gallery is the Standard Chartered Ottoman Room
which displays objects from the reign of the Ottoman Empire of
Turkey and Syria. In the Al-Quran and Manuscripts Gallery is a
collection of more than 200 Islamic manuscripts which include a
30-Judz' Al-Quran from the Ming Dynasty.
National Planetarium
The planetarium is situated atop a hill within the Lake Gardens
close to the National Mosque, the National Museum and the Bird
Park. Among the interesting features found with in the
planetarium are the Space Theatre, Space Science Exhibition,
Resource Center, Viewing Gallery and Ancient Observatory Park.
The Space Theatre screens two shows daily the Space Science Show
and Space Movie. There is also an observatory equipped with a
14-inch telescope.
Istana Negara
Istana Negara is the official residence of the Yang Di-Pertuan
Agong, the King of Malaysia. It is located on a hillock a Jalan
Istana on the fringe of the city center. Immaculately landscaped
green terrace grounds that are ablaze with flowers all year
round surround the palace. The palace is also the venue for
state functions and ceremonies.
Sri Mahamariaman Temple
Located along Jalan Tun HS Lee, this temple is one of the most
elaborate Hindu temples in the country. The temple has hundreds
of intricate carvings of Hindu deities. Italian and Spanish
tiles cover the walls of the interior. Built in 1873, it also
houses a giant chariot that is used to transport a Hindu deity
during the annual festival of Thaipusam. Visitors to the temple
may have a chance to witness a fascinating traditional Hindu
wedding or pooja (prayer ritual).
Thean Hou Temple
The Thean Hou Temple is located on a hill overlooking Jaland
Syed Putra. It is said to be one of the largest Chinese temples
outside China. The temple has interesting Oriental architecture
composed of celestial dragons and other mythical creatures.
Kuala Lumpur Tower
The tallest in Asia and the fourth highest telecommunications
tower in the world at a height of 421 meters - with superb
panoramic views and the bird's eye view of the Klang Valley from
the dizzying height of its observation deck or revolving
restaurant. The tower also serves as a transmission station for
telecommunications, radio and television.
Malaysia Tourist Information
Complex (MATIC)
This complex, built in 1935, was once the residence of Eu Tong
Seng, a wealthy Chinese miner and planter. It subsequently
served as the war office of the British Army, the headquarters
of the Japanese Army, the venue for first sitting of the
Malaysian Parliament and also the installation ceremonies of
several kings of the country. Extensive renovation works were
carried out in 1988 to convert the building into tourist
information complex.
Bird Park
The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is the largest bird park in South
East Asia. Many species of birds from around the world co-exist
in an environment that has been carefully created to resemble
their natural habitats.
Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens or
Taman Tasik Perdana
The "green belt" - 91.6 hectares (227 acres) of
planned parkland less than 1 km (0.6 mi) west of the central
city - built in 1880s. The main focus of the park is Tasik
Perdana - the Premier Lake - where locals and visitors cavort on
the banks or in little paddle boats. It offers facilities such
as a children's playground, jogging tracks, exercise stations
and rowing boats. The Panggung Anniversari, set in a secluded
valley within the park, is the venue for regular musical and
cultural performances. Attractions in the park can be reached
either on-foot, or by regular shuttle buses.
Petronas
Twin Tower
Declared as Malaysia's and the world's tallest buildings, the
Petronas Twin Towers, are the inspired symbol of Malaysia's new
landmark to the world, situated in the north-west corner of the Kuala
Lumpur City Center (KLCC) development. The buildings were
built to house the headquarters of PETRONAS, Malaysia's
national petroleum corporation. Soaring 452 meters up to the
sky, the Petronas Twin Towers mark both in time and space an
historic achievement and the national pride of Malaysia. These
88-story buildings are a testimony of the capabilities and
determination of the Malaysian people in bringing to reality a
project of such a mammoth scale, an engineering feat
unparalleled in the country.
