Orchid and
Hibiscus Gardens
Located in Taman Tasik Perdana, the Orchid Garden has over 800
species of exotic Malaysian orchids. Close by is the Hibiscus
Garden with more than 500 varieties of rare and exotic blooms in
a riot of colors and shades.
Butterfly Park
The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is located next to the Bird
Park. It is home to 6,000 butterflies of over 120 Species. The
park's environment is designed to resemble the natural habitat
of the butterflies. More than 15,000 plants from 100 species
have been used to recreate a Malaysian rainforest atmosphere.
There is a nursery and breeding area for the butterflies.
Deer Park
The Deer Park is located close to the Lake Gardens. The park has
been created to provide a natural habitat for deer which include
hinds, does and fawns. Visitors to the park will be able to
watch these graceful creatures from a close distance and even
feed them by hand. The mousedeer, which is the smallest hoofed
animal in the world, can also be spotted near the streams that
run along the park.
Taman Tasik Titiwangsa
Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, another green lung, is located in the
northeastern fringe of the city. It is a placid lakeside garden
and has facilities for jogging, workout stations and a
restaurant by the lake. There are also facilities for canoeing
and aqua biking.
National Monument
This striking bronze monument, located at Lake Gardens, was
constructed in 1966. It was designed by Felix de Weldon, the
same architect who created the Iwo Jima Memorial Monument in
Washington. The 15.54 meter high monument is a memorial to honor
the members of the Malaysian Security Forces who died in action
during the Emergency- a twelve struggle against communist
insurgency that ended in 1960.
Tun Abdul Razak Memorial
Further down the road from the Deer Park is the Tun Abdul Razak
Memorial, once the official residence of Malaysia's second Prime
Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak bin Dato' Hussein, who was
popularly known as "The Father of Development". The
memorial houses a vast collection of his personal and official
memorabilia, gathered during his tenure as Prime Minister from
1970-1976.
Parliament House
Standing on elevated ground, commanding a panoramic view of the
Lake Gardens is Parliament House. This 18-story building has a
library, a banquet hall as well as dining and committee rooms.
The various sections of the building are interspersed with
indoor gardens and pools. Visitors who wish to visit Parliament
House can make prior arrangements with the relevant authorities.
National Science Center
The national Science Center is located atop a hill in Bukit
Kiara on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The building is designed
in the shape of cone with its top removed and the whole
structure is covered with a huge geodesic dome. It is equipped
with an Intelligent Building Automation System and its
exhibition gallery occupies two floors with a total area of
6,717.6 sq. meters, a multimedia library, lecture theater,
multi-purpose hall and cafeteria.
Bank Negara Money Museum
Located in the Bank Negara building at Jalan Dato' Onn, the
Money Museum has an interesting display of old Malaysian
currency, commemorative coins, rare coins and foreign
currencies.
The National Museum
The National Museum is located at the fringe of Taman Tasik
Perdana along Jalan Travers, close to the Kuala Lumpur Railway
Station. Designed to resemble a Malay palace, its impressive
façade of two large murals each depicting scenes of Malaysian
history and crafts, reflects the colorful heritage of the
country. The museum houses several galleries containing an
impressive collection of artifacts on local history, culture and
customs, arts and handicraft, economic activities, flora and
fauna, weapons and currencies. Outdoor static displays include
old locomotive, vintage cars and replicas of ancient Malay
palaces.
Armed Forces Museum
The museum is located on the grounds of the Ministry of Defense
at Jalan Padang Tembak. Here, the visitor will be able to catch
a glimpse of Malaysia's military exhibits such as historical
pictures, uniforms and decorations of the Malaysian armed
forces, the Malaysian armory, naval guns, artillery, old canons,
military aircraft and vehicles.
National Art Gallery
The gallery is located at Jalan Temerloh, off Jalan Tun Razak.
The displays include works of local and international artists,
sculptures and designs.
Kuala Lumpur Memorial
Library
A magnificent double-story colonial style building, it serves
both as a public library and resource center. It provides
reference materials and information on the history of Kuala
Lumpur.
The National Theater
Permanent home of the National Theater Company and the National
Symphony Orchestra, the National Theater is responsible for the
development of all forms of theatrical art in Malaysia.
Designed as a functional
building which not only reflects the beauty of form, the
National Theater is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment
while still retaining the national heritage and traditional
Malay design. Drama, dance and musical performances are held
regularly.
