| With so many
cultures and religions in Malaysia, there is almost always
something going on. Visitors from Western countries will need to
check the local lunar calendar for the exact dates of most
events. Examples of the most "must-not-miss" events
are:
National Day (31st August)
The nation's Independence Day which is traditionally celebrated
with much pomp in Kuala Lumpur at the Dataran Merdeka. In recent
year, the National Day celebration has been held in other major
cities.
Federal Territory Day
Kuala Lumpur celebrates its declaration as a Federal Territory
on 1st February. City dwellers observe the occasion with
day-long competitions and performances at the city's main parks
- Tasik Perdana and Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.
Kuala Lumpur International
Towerthon
This special event held annually in July each year challenges
participants to conquer the world's tallest communication tower
and currently the highest in Southeast Asia. The energy sapping
race involves an 800 meter uphill dash to the base of the KL
Tower followed by a grueling climb up 2,058 steps to the Tower
Head, standing at 288 meters.
Colors of Malaysia
The Colors of Malaysia is a month-long celebration of the unique
centuries-old culture, arts and traditions of the multi-racial
and multi-ethnic communities of Malaysia. The highlight is a
spectacular parade bearing the theme "Citrawarna
Malaysia" or "Colors of Malaysia" held in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia's capital city. The parade showcases the
various states and ethnic groups in the country dressed in
colorful costumes performing their dances to the melodious
strains of traditional music.
